Malcolm Saville was a children’s writer who came to Shropshire in the 1930s and it became very special to him. So, when he wrote his first adventure story in 1943, where better to set it than in the county he loved and, as his family had been evacuated to South Shropshire, why not place the members of The Lone Pine Club there, in the Long Mynd area? Witchend, the club’s base, nestles on the side of the Mynd about three miles from Church Stretton and, like most of Saville’s locations,  is a real place.

Mike has a virtually full time job as our Newsletter Editor but he will take the morning off to talk to us about an author that he has loved since childhood and the talk will include many pictures, audio and video that tell the story of a writer who, though not as famous as his contemporary and friend: Enid Blyton, wrote over 90 books, many of which were set in Shropshire.
