Art Appreciation

The Art Appreciation group studies art history up to the beginning of the 20th century. We focus on a theme for a September-to-July period. We have looked at Dutch and Spanish Golden Ages, French painting, Italian art, British painting and Russian art. From September 2025 to February 2028, we are focusing on English Art. From the finest achievement of insular art of the Lindisfarne Gospel of the 7th-8th centuries to distinctive British form of post-impressionism of German-born British artist Walter Sickert in the early 20th century.

Group members are invited to contribute, introducing an artist or theme illustrated by relevant paintings. Usually there are three volunteers per meeting, so preparation is not too onerous, and we like time for discussion encouraging all members to share their knowledge and impressions. We use a digital projector and screen to show pictures at meetings. It is helpful if volunteers have computer access to collect illustrations they want to show us, but this is not essential.

We always welcome new members. Joining and leaving can be made online directly by logging into the members portal Here.

There is a small charge to cover the hire of the room and refreshments.
